Stop the 6.3% excise tax increase due on October 1

Stop the 6.3% excise tax increase due on October 1

The Issue

Dear Mr. President and your new administration,

We first congratulate you for forming the new Government and we wish you God’s blessing as you steer our country into greater heights.

Through a legal notice published by the Commissioner General of Kenya Revenue Authority in exercise of powers conferred by section 10 of the Excise Duty Act, the commissioner seeks to implement an inflationary adjustment on all Excisable goods of 6.3% effective 1 October 2022.  This is after an average increase of 15% on excisable goods implemented in July 2022.

The result of that adjustment will see a further increase to the cost of excisable consumer goods and services for Kenyans who are already stretched by the high cost of living and unemployment. The removal of the subsidies on fuel and maize flour further compounds this problem to the ordinary Mwananchi.  Due to high taxation, most businesses have become unviable, and a real risk can be seen in the market through the growth of tax-evaded illicit products and counterfeits, which consumers are forced to take due to economical circumstances risking their health and impacting Government’s ability to generate additional revenue.

Part of the new administration's campaign pledges was to tackle the spiralling cost of living; we ask that you take the first step in stopping the implementation of this inflationary adjustment on 1 October 2022 as this will have a dire impact on us as citizens.

God bless your Leadership, God Bless Kenya.
