The issue

To the Australian Government, Minister for the NDIS, and every Senator:

People with disability are not the problem.
Cutting the supports that keep us connected, healthy and independent is.
From 1 October 2026 the Government plans to slash social, civic and community participation budgets by around 50% (and capacity-building supports by 10%) as plans renew. These are the funds that get people out of the house, into the community, to work, study, therapy and friendships.

Government modelling and independent experts have already warned these cuts will increase isolation, mental and physical decline, carer burnout (especially for women), and the risk of harm and neglect. The people who need the most support will lose the most.

Fraud and waste must be stopped — and stronger measures against rorting are welcome. But the bulk of the $38 billion in savings is coming from cutting the actual supports people with disability rely on, not from cleaning up the system.

We demand:

  • Immediately scrap the planned 50% cut to social and community participation budgets and the 10% cut to capacity-building supports.

  • Do not remove anyone from the NDIS or reduce their supports until proper foundational and mainstream services are fully funded, operational and proven to work.

  • Focus savings on real fraud, over-claiming and administrative waste — not on people with disability.
Co-design any future changes with people with disability and their families, not behind closed doors.

The NDIS was created so people with disability could live ordinary lives with dignity and choice. These cuts reverse that promise.
