Stop the 10.2% Property Tax Increase

Stop the 10.2% Property Tax Increase
The Issue
Montgomery County Executice Marc Elrich has proposed permanently raising our property taxes by 10%.
Montgomery’s current property tax rate is roughly 99 cents per $100 of assessed value. The average home sale in Montgomery County is roughly $550K according to Redfin meaning the proposed tax by Elrich would increase our property tax bills by roughly $550.
While the funds would be directed to MCPS, MCPS lacks an independent auditor, something which Fairfax County schools utilize to ensure employees can report waste fraud and abuse without fear of retaliation.
At a time of record inflation, and where Montgomery County's middle class base of federal employees have seen raises at less than half the rate of inflation, the county should be doing all that it can to cut costs and reduce the tax burden on it's residents.
The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce opposes the proposal to raise property taxes. In a statement, Gigi Godwin, President and CEO of the chamber, wrote, “There are so many challenges that our businesses and residents currently face including inflation, housing costs, and the difficulty employers are having in attracting and retaining talent because of our high cost of living.”
Godwin said the proposal seems “tone deaf” and “out of step with the issues.”
The budget proposal goes to the County Council on April 11. Please sign the petition and submit testimony in opposition to this outlandish proposal.
