The Issue

I am writing this petition because, like many others, I have watched in disbelief as pensioners, who have diligently contributed to their pensions over many years, are being unfairly taxed on the money meant to support them in their retirement. This situation is unjust, especially when compared to individuals who receive benefits without facing the same tax burdens, despite a significant portion not having contributed similarly to the system.

Let's consider the facts. Pensioners have spent decades in the workforce, paying taxes, contributing to their national insurance, and saving for retirement through payroll deductions into various pension schemes. According to UK statistics, approximately 12.5 million people are receiving the State Pension, most of whom have spent their lives building not only their future but that of the nation. These individuals come from a generation of hard workers who deserve to enjoy their retirement without additional financial burdens.

In contrast, many individuals receiving government benefits, who may have never paid into these systems or only done so minimally, receive their payments tax-free. This imbalanced system not only feels unfair but discourages a sense of justice and responsibility across different societal groups.

I urge the policymakers to reevaluate the current tax system for pensions. We need a fair tax policy where either pension continues to be tax-free up to a higher threshold or the tax rules apply equally to all forms of government-provided financial support.

Implementing a more just system could involve reviewing tax thresholds for pensions or ensuring that individuals on benefits who are able to work are gradually moved into employment, contributing their fair share. Moreover, discussions around this topic should consider both the financial costs and the societal impact of maintaining an inspiring and rewarding system for all citizens.

This is not just about numbers; it's a matter of basic fairness. Let’s ask for a tax policy that treats every citizen with dignity and fairness, recognizing the valuable contributions of our pensioners and ensuring an equitable approach for all. Join me in calling on the government to rectify this imbalance and ensure that pensioners are not financially penalized for their lifetime of hard work.

Please sign this petition to support a just tax policy for pensioners and make a difference for those who have given so much to society over their working lives.
