Stop tagging book covers with Netflix and Prime Video logos!
The Issue
STOP THE ADVERTISEMENT STAMPING FOR STREAMING SERVICES ON BOOKS.
People who are passionate about reading love their books. They love the smell, the feel, and where those books can take us. They'll dedicate entire shelves, corners of family shared spaces, even entire rooms to their books. Husbands will leave for work out of town, and when they return, they'll discover entire new bookshelves loaded with books, cause frankly, the collection simply needed more space.
For many, a good book is the best way to unwind, escape reality, forget about our world and go somewhere else... so why is it now every time I pick up a newer edition book, I must be forced to remember some shmuck somewhere, who never really appreciated the book and its lore, has butchered it with a terrible TV knockoff? That it's now streaming and I should not read my book, but go watch it instead?
I now hesitate to buy a book I want because it has this ugly logo, a permanent blemish upon it's cover, front and center and distracting me and taking away from cover art. Perhaps these logos may attract a few otherwise book wary patron to try the novelization, seeing as how they liked the show perhaps the book would be good too? But if marketing is targeting the non-readers at the cost of their diehard novel fans, then this is short sighted and doomed to fail. I'd argue it's also just downright disrespectful to the book readers out there.
We DON'T CARE if it's on Amazon, thanks to over saturation of advertisements and social media WE KNOW it's on Netflix, but we DO NOT WANT to be reminded of such things when we pick up a book to read and unplug.
This problem originally started with optional stickers, that one could peel off, and while that was annoying, it was easily fixable. Now, more and more covers are stamped and it's only getting worse. I don't want future readers to only ever know books that advertise electronic digestion of debased and poorly presented media, nor get to the 5th book in a series only to find the covers from then on shall be marked. I haven't bought a single book with these ugly stamps on them yet, instead loaning or buying second hand. I'd encourage you all, if you feel like I feel, to sign this, abstain from buying said marked books, and fight for some change.
Books are stories that shape people's identities, they're adventures we go on alone but share globally and communally, and they were never meant to be disrespected and reduced to billboards for crappy tv.
