Stop systematic persecution of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians

The Issue

The Ethiopian Orthodox Christian community has been enduring ongoing systematic persecution which threatens not only their existence but also the rich cultural and religious heritage of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. This community, which forms an integral part of Ethiopia's historical fabric, now faces unprecedented challenges threatening their religious freedom and human rights.

Ethiopia, with its deep-rooted Christian history, is home to one of the world’s most ancient Christian communities, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. This church, known for its unique traditions and customs, has significantly contributed to world civilization with its architectural and literary heritage, including the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela and the ancient manuscripts of the Axumite kingdom. Yet, in recent times, incidents of harassment, displacement, violence, and discrimination against its followers have been alarmingly frequent.

As of recent reports from credible organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, there have been numerous documented instances of attacks on Orthodox Christians and their places of worship. According to the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, over [insert factual statistic] churches have been burned or vandalized in the past year alone. [Insert factual statistic] Orthodox Christians have been displaced, highlighting the urgent need for action.

The Ethiopian government and international community cannot remain silent in the face of such severe human rights abuses. We urgently call upon the Ethiopian government to uphold its responsibility to protect all religious communities and ensure that justice is served against perpetrators of violence. Furthermore, international bodies and supporters of human rights must apply pressure and offer aid to halt these injustices.

Implementing measures such as increasing security for places of worship, promoting interfaith dialogue, and ensuring rapid response to violent incidents can help deter further escalation of violence. In addition, educating communities about tolerance and the importance of religious diversity stands as a long-term solution toward peace and mutual understanding.

We ask for your support to protect the rights of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians and preserve the diversity and inclusivity that Ethiopia has treasured for centuries. Please join us in urging the Ethiopian authorities and international human rights organizations to take decisive action against religious persecution. Sign this petition to help safeguard the future of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians and their invaluable heritage.
