The Issue

As a citizen of Garfield Townships in Newaygo, Michigan, I am deeply concerned about the decision to allow Sylvan Solar LLC to build its massive industrial solar arrays here. This project would consume 840 acres of prime farmland in Garfield Township alone, not to mention additional acreage in Sheridan. These lands have been the backbone of our community's agricultural heritage for generations. We cannot stand by as this foreign company threatens to consume our precious resources, altering our landscape and harming our community's way of life.

While the development of renewable energy is crucial for our future, it should not come at such a high cost to local communities and their lands. Consuming such vast amounts of farmland poses a significant threat to local food production and the livelihoods of those who depend on agriculture.

Sylvan Solar LLC plans to build expansive industrial solar arrays that will change the landscape and ecosystem of our region irreparably. The rich agricultural soil in our townships supports a thriving ecosystem that feeds our families and sustains local wildlife. We have a responsibility to safeguard these lands for future generations. Moreover, the cultural and historical significance of these farmlands goes beyond their agricultural value; they are a part of our history, a legacy passed down through generations.

This project does not reflect the values or the best interests of Newaygo County residents. It prioritizes profit over people, community, and the environment. Instead of covering our fertile lands with industrial solar panels, we should explore alternative sites that do not compromise our agricultural heritage or community integrity. Nearby brownfields, rooftops, and non-arable lands present viable alternatives that would allow for solar energy development without displacing local agriculture.

Join me in standing up for our community, our history, and our future. Sign this petition to urge local authorities to reject Sylvan Solar LLC's plan to build industrial solar arrays in Newaygo. Together, we can preserve our farmland and ensure that any development reflects the true needs and values of our community.
