Galway Bay FM is being urged to stop encouraging listeners to go greyhound racing at a track where dogs suffer and die.
The station is currently running a competition with a prize of “a fantastic night” at Galway greyhound stadium.
In an appeal to the station, ICABS highlighted the cruelty and killing in greyhound racing and pointed out that at least 127 greyhounds suffered injuries at Galway stadium and 33 were killed by a track vet over the past six years alone.
Among the victims was a greyhound who could be heard crying out in agony after falling to the ground during a race. 1-year-old “Ballycastle Val” collided with another greyhound and tumbled at the beginning of what was to be her first and final race. As the 5th January 2018 race continued, Ballycastle Val’s cries rang out around the stadium and are clearly audible in the race footage – https://streamable.com/4sbs4w
At tracks around Ireland in the same period, 1,891 greyhounds suffered injuries and 625 were killed. These deaths are just the tip of the iceberg - thousands more greyhounds are mercilessly killed annually because they don’t make the grade.
As revealed in the award-winning "RTE Investigates: Greyhounds running for their lives" documentary, around 6,000 greyhounds are killed every year simply because they are not fast enough. It included shocking scenes of dogs being delivered to a knackery where they were shot in the head and dumped in a skip. One shot dog was seen writhing on the ground in agony as his merciless owner drove away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYTb2qBjlMM
