Ireland’s greyhound “industry” is “CRUEL AND ECONOMICALLY UNVIABLE” - Read Nuala Donlon’s Letter to the Editor in the Irish Examiner...

Cruel greyhound industry unviable
Irish Examiner, 16 Sep 2020

The news that the Preferred Results Consultancy Company is to take High Court action against the lrish Greyhound Board will be welcomed by all who campaign against the greyhound industry.

Since RTÉ exposed the most damming finding of the Preferred Results Report, ie, the systematic slaughter of thousands of unwanted dogs by greyhound breeders annually, the lGB has sought to limit the damage by rubbishing the figures contained in that report. This, despite the fact that the figures arrived at are based on the very data supplied by the lGB.

The many similarities between the lGB’s own Strategic Plan 2018-22 and the contested Preferred Results Report will no doubt be brought to the attention of those delivering judgement in the impending legal action. For, whether by co-incidence or design, the two documents mirror each other to a striking degree.

Except when it comes to the crucial issue of breeding. On this issue, the lGB retains its commitment to incentivising the over-breeding of dogs, thus ensuring that the annual cull of greyhound pups will continue. Those of us long familiar with the lGB’s modus operandi have not been taken in by its seeming new-found commitment to the notion of animal welfare. Its lack of good faith in relation to same is on full display in its own strategic plan.

This industry has received a quarter of a billion euros in public funding since 2002. Ministers McConologue and Hackett would do well to familiarise themselves with the details of this plan before they commit to spending another huge tranche of exchequer funding on this cruel and economically unviable industry.
