Online discounts company, Groupon, is once again being urged to remove greyhound racing from its website - just months after an assurance that greyhound racing deals were taken down and that the company would “do anything we can to prevent them from appearing on our site.”
Despite this, a deal for Swindon greyhound track is currently active on the Groupon website.
In a renewed appeal to the company, ICABS pointed out that the greyhound industry is inherently cruel, with much suffering and death. We highlighted sickening Greyhound Board of Great Britain statistics which reveal that in greyhound racing in the UK in 2019, 4,970 dogs suffered injuries and 710 died or were destroyed. The previous year, almost 1,000 greyhounds died or were killed.
Groupon was told about the shocking “RTE Investigates: Greyhounds Running For Their Lives” documentary which revealed that, here in Ireland, around 6,000 dogs are killed every year simply because they are not fast enough to win. The programme included horrifying scenes of dogs being dragged into knackeries to be shot in the head. One dog was seen writhing on the ground in agony as his merciless owner drove away.
