Stop suicide

Stop suicide
The Issue
I am writing to you as a concerned citizen and family member deeply affected by a tragic event that recently occurred in our community. My cousin, who had been struggling with mental health challenges, took his own life after being hospitalized for a week. This devastating loss has prompted me to reach out and advocate for a critical change: the installation of safety nets under the Narrows Bridge.
The Narrows Bridge has become a known site of tragedy, with numerous lives lost to suicide over the years. According to a report from Kiro7, Since it was completed in 1932, 230 people have died by suicide off the bridge. Additionally, many attempts may go unreported, as some individuals may jump and not be counted, underscoring the urgent need for preventative measures. According to the 2021 Injury & Violence Prevention Surveillance & Evaluation, WA suicide rate has been higher than the national rate for more than 10 years. We know that our community members are struggling at higher rates than other states and we must protect them.
We can look to successful examples from around the world that demonstrate the efficacy of safety nets in preventing suicide. For instance, the installation of a suicide prevention barrier on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco has shown promising results, with a significant reduction in the number of deaths since its implementation. In our own state we have seen the success with The Aurora Bridge; since its implementation of nets the suicide prevention fence has dropped to functional zero. These cases illustrate that when we take proactive steps to safeguard vulnerable individuals, we can save lives.
The installation of safety nets could serve as a crucial barrier, offering a moment of pause and a lifeline for those in crisis. Many lives could be saved by providing individuals in distress with a second chance. Nets would not only help prevent falls but could also act as a visible reminder that support is available and that there are people who care.
It is essential that we create an environment where individuals facing mental health challenges feel seen and supported, rather than isolated in their struggles. I urge you to consider the impact that safety nets could have on our community and to advocate for their installation on the Narrows Bridge. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that no one else has to experience the profound pain of losing a loved one to suicide.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter. I hope to see positive action taken soon to protect those who are vulnerable and to promote mental health awareness in our community.
