Stop street sweeping tickets in Costa Mesa

The Issue

After finishing an 8-hour shift, there is nothing more disheartening than realizing that I cannot park on my own street because, according to the current rules, parking is prohibited until 2 p.m., even though the street sweeper has already completed its route. This irrational policy is causing frustrations for many residents across Costa Mesa, CA, and it is time we demand change.

Street sweeping is essential for maintaining clean and safe city streets, but the regulations surrounding parking during these times are in desperate need of revision. Simply put, if the street sweeper has already passed, residents should be allowed to park their vehicles without risking a ticket. Continuing to enforce parking restrictions even after street sweeping is completed is an unnecessary inconvenience and a financial burden on hardworking citizens.

This practice not only strains our already limited parking resources but also disproportionately affects those who work non-standard hours, students coming home after a long day, and anyone who has commitments that do not align with these designated hours. In a city growing as rapidly as Costa Mesa, our policies should reflect our need for flexibility and understanding.

Let us propose a fair solution: implement a system where enforcement officers update digital boards to signal the completion of the street sweeper's route. Alternatively, a mobile app could notify residents that parking is permissible after the sweeper has passed. Both measures can maintain cleanliness while respecting the community’s need for practical parking solutions.

Join us in urging the Costa Mesa City Council to end the issuing of street sweeping tickets in situations where the sweeper has completed its job early. We need the understanding and cooperation of our local government to foster a community where regulations serve, rather than hinder, its residents.

Please sign this petition and help us bring forth this much-needed change in Costa Mesa.
