Stop state and federal funding to teen behavior modification schools
The Issue
My nephew has been at The Sorenson Ranch School in Utah for over two years now. In all that time, I have not received a single call or letter from him. The school restricts communication with his family, which raises significant concerns about their methods and motivates me to question how such practices can be considered therapeutic or beneficial to any child.
Behavior modification schools, often marketed as therapeutic boarding schools, promise families they will help teenagers with issues ranging from behavioral problems to mental health. However, behind the walls of these schools, there are countless stories of mistreatment, emotional and psychological harm, and neglect. Reports have surfaced across various states, highlighting a disturbing lack of regulation, oversight, and accountability. In many cases, children are not allowed to have any contact with their loved ones, stripping them of their support systems and isolating them in a way that can have long-term negative effects.
In the United States, an estimated 200,000 to 500,000 teens have been enrolled in behavior modification programs. The facilities often receive state and federal funding, which is used to sustain practices that may be causing more harm than good. Investigations by advocacy groups have revealed instances of neglect, abuse, and violations of basic human rights. These programs should no longer benefit from taxpayer dollars that could be better allocated toward community-based mental health services and resources that keep families involved and informed.
I urge lawmakers to take immediate action to cease state and federal funding to teen behavior modification schools across the United States. Instead, funding should be redirected towards evidence-based programs that support family involvement and the well-being of our youth. By signing this petition, you can help protect countless teens from potentially harmful situations and encourage a system that prioritizes transparency, safety, and compassion. Together, we can advocate for change that values the mental health and rights of all children and teens in our nation. Sign this petition to join the fight for a more humane and effective approach to supporting our youth.
