Stop Stalking Celebrities!

The Issue

On Friday, August 18th, Taylor Swift attended the rehearsal dinner for Jack Antonoff and Margaret Qualley’s wedding. When she entered the restaurant, there were a few bystanders who noticed her, however when she left, there were thousands of fans crowded around the area, blocking traffic and making the entire area unsafe for pedestrians. Not to mention that this was an unsafe situation for Taylor as well- any one of those people could have been concealing a weapon that could have been used to harm her or someone close to her.

This fan behavior, or more accurately, stalking, is so wrong on so many different levels. Not only is it just plain weird to look up someone’s location and travel to where they are, hoping for a glimpse of them, but it’s dangerous for everyone involved. Taylor and her team have no way of knowing who will show up, and in a large crowd like that, there are so many avenues for disaster. And let’s talk about the fact that the event wasn’t even about Taylor, she was attending as a guest. How must she have felt, knowing all these people were there for *her*?

Did Taylor smile and wave for the cameras? Yes. But does that mean she was happy? Not at all.

The public has shown time and time again that they will take the smallest instance and use it to compile a false narrative about someone. Taylor knows this, as she’s experienced it firsthand. If she spoke up, and asked everyone to leave, she’d be painted as rude and unwelcoming to her fans. In a self preservative move, she decided to be nice.

But just because she’s tolerating it and playing nice does not make it okay in the slightest. She shouldn’t have to pretend to be happy to see thousands of people lining up in front of a restaurant, hoping to catch a glimpse of her. She should be allowed to tell them that’s wrong.

People claim that celebrities like Taylor have dug their own graves in these situations. She wanted to be famous, so now she should deal with the repercussions of that decision. This is incorrect. Taylor and other celebrities like her may have wanted to be famous, but nobody wants to feel like they’re being watched wherever they go. It is basic human decency to leave them alone.

That’s why I’m creating this petition- to hopefully protect Taylor and other celebrities like her from situations like what was experienced on Friday. Please sign in order to show your support, and hopefully we’ll eventually be able to lay down some laws regarding the public’s treatment of celebrities.

Please help us, before it’s too late. Princess Diana died because her car was being chased by paparazzi stalking her. Christina Grimmie was shot by an obsessive fan. Don’t let your favorite celebrity be next.
