Stop SSEN's Pylons from ruining Blackhills and Peterhead Countryside!
The Issue
Say No To Pylons!
Blackhills, a small yet vibrant community on the outskirts of Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, is currently facing a significant threat from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN). The proposed overhead alignment connections (R1 and R2) aim to cut through this beautiful rural area, transforming our peaceful, untouched landscapes into industrial corridors. This development will cast a long shadow over our community.
The proposed alignments (R1 and R2) are incompatible with the rural setting of Blackhills. This small community will be completely overshadowed by what is essentially an industrial development. Such a transformation will undoubtedly deter people from living in the area and negatively impact property values. This development contradicts national policy regarding the safeguarding and protection of rural character, architectural interest, historic interest, close historical associations and the alignment routes, particularly R1 and R2, will have a detrimental impact on rural living. It also contrasts with local development plan policies, which aim to conserve the area for present and future generations.
Local council planning regulations restrict building on hilltops or high ground due to concerns about sight lines, visual impact, and potential effects on the surrounding area. These restrictions are designed to maintain the character of the landscape and protect residents' views. Planning authorities aim to preserve the natural beauty of the landscape. However, large structures, such as the placement of a pylon by SSEN at one of the highest points in the Blackhills area, and the necessary removal of mature woodlands to facilitate their project, can disrupt this harmony.
SSEN must explore alternative methodologies that minimise the detrimental impact on established communities like Blackhills or select alignment (R3), which affects fewer households and allows for future residential and industrial development to build around it.
We urge SSEN, local authorities, and policymakers to listen to the voices of Blackhills residents and reconsider this development plan. We are not against progress, but it must not come at the cost of our environment, heritage, and livelihoods. Your support is crucial in helping preserve the integrity, tranquillity, and beauty of Blackhills.
Please sign this petition and help us protect the well-being and future of our community in Peterhead. Together, we can advocate for a solution that respects our home and heritage.
