The Issue

For many of us, the serene waters and vibrant wildlife of Lower Tampa Bay are more than just a picturesque landscape—they’re home. These natural habitats support not only diverse marine life but also the livelihoods of countless people working in fisheries, tourism, and local businesses. Yet, all of this is under threat as SSA Marine, a prominent cruise terminal operator in North America, plans to expand its operations in our precious bay.

The proposed development promises economic gains on the surface, but at what cost? The introduction of large cruise terminals will inevitably lead to increased pollution, water contamination, and disruption of the delicate ecosystems we hold dear. The fallout from such environmental degradation will spell disaster for the fisheries that many local families rely on for income. We’re not just talking about numbers here—we’re talking about real jobs, real incomes, and real people who will face the brunt of these corporate-driven decisions.

Moreover, the ecological balance of Lower Tampa Bay is fragile. It hosts endangered species and features a diverse array of delicate aquatic plants that are crucial for sustaining biodiversity. This balance has been maintained over generations, and any severe disruption could be irreversible, leaving us with damaged fisheries and devastated livelihoods. Allowing this development is not just a gamble with our environment; it's a gamble with our future.

Cruise ships stir up a hurricane's worth of sediment. For example; when cruise ships lumber into Key West’s shallow harbor, they can sometimes churn up a storm of sediment more potent than a hurricane, new monitoring by the city shows  (Nov 2024).

A year’s worth of tracking by the College of the Florida Keys found 32 events where turbidity measurements not only exceeded limits set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency but often reached levels above what hurricanes like Helene and Milton generate when they pass by, according to Patrick Rice, principal investigator for marine research at the college.

We urge SSA Marine to reconsider its plans and seek environmentally friendly alternatives that do not sacrifice the bay’s rich natural and economic resources. Community engagement and sustainable development strategies should be at the forefront of any future endeavors in Lower Tampa Bay.

Join us in this crucial fight to protect a resource that is not just an environmental treasure, but also a vital economic pillar. Sign this petition to stop SSA Marine from proceeding with their damaging plans and help safeguard the environment and community of Lower Tampa Bay for generations to come.
