Stop Speeders in Meadowbrook

Stop Speeders in Meadowbrook
The Issue
In order to address the constant speeding along Delaney Hills Lane, a 25 MPH zone, that threatens the safety of pedestrians, especially young children riding bicycles and walking to the pool, the residents of Meadowbrook request that the Town of Fuquay-Varina and/or the State of North Carolina upgrade the stop signs at the intersection of Delaney Hills Lane and Heathland Farms Drive (35.576721700730715, -78.75840248585847) and Delaney Hills Lane and Heiser lane (35.576487, -78.763663) to a four-way (all way) stops.
Upgrading to a four-way (all way) stop sign at the intersection of Delaney Hills Lane and Heathland Farm Drive will decrease the speed vehicles transit to and from the entrance of Meadowbrook to the traffic circle at the intersection of Delaney Hills Lane and Stanstead Park Lane (35.57635063393909, -78.76074331131029), a distance of 0.31 miles (500 meters). Excess speeding is a common complaint from residents of the neighborhood as vehicles entering the neighborhood from Highway 55 and traveling west often keep highway speeds up to the first speed restriction, passing thirteen homes many with young children, the pool, clubhouse, and highly trafficked pedestrian areas. Inversely vehicles leaving the traffic circle and transiting east often accelerate inadvertently due to the traveling downhill and passing along the same potential hazards listed above.
Upgrading to a four-way (all way) stop at the intersection of Delaney Hills Lane and Heiser Lane will decrease the speed of vehicles transiting east and going downhill a distance of 0.22 miles (354 meters) before reaching the next speed restriction, the traffic circle at the intersection of Delaney Hills Lane and Stanstead Park Lane (35.57635063393909, -78.76074331131029). This is another area of constant occurrence of excess speeding as many vehicles use the back entrance of Meadowbrook to avoid the traffic light at 55 and Honeycutt Road and will increase speeds to “beat traffic.” The 0.22 length of Delaney Hills Lane in question has 18 houses and is highly trafficked by pedestrians and includes crosswalks.
The Meadowbrook community has 284 houses and Delaney Hills Lane is the primary corridor of vehicle travel connecting both the front and back entrance of the neighborhood. This includes access to the pool, club house, gym, mailboxes, playground, and greenway which residents travel to by bicycle or foot traffic. Furthermore, most families in Meadowbrook have school-aged children making traffic unrestricted by stop signs, speed bumps, or traffic circles a danger to not only those that live along Delaney Hills Lane but also the entire neighborhood. Additionally, as noted above many local drivers who are not part of the community use Meadowbrook to bypass the traffic light at the intersection of Highway 55 and Honeycutt Road making mornings and afternoons the most dangerous times for excess speeding which unfortunately corresponds to when kids are walking to bus stops or playing after school. The community has installed “please watch your speed signs” and increased posting of “25 MPH signs,” however, thru traffic in excess of the posted speed limit has increased. Only stop signs can solve this pressing issue.
As of 2025 the Delaney Hills Lane / Heathland Farms Drive and Delaney Hills Lane / Heiser Lane intersection only have stop signs on Heathland Farms Drive and Heiser Lane providing right of way to traffic transiting Delaney Hills Lane through the intersection. This must be changed for the safety of our community. We, the residents of Meadowbrook, request that the town and/or state take an initiative-taking approach and install four-way (all way) stop signs at the Delaney Hills Lane / Heathland Farms Drive and Delaney Hills Lane / Heiser Land intersections. Ignoring this request will put the residents and more importantly the children of Meadowbrook in harm’s way a risk that only exponentially increases as the neighborhood continues to grow. Additionally, it will reduce the calls and complaints that residents have been making to local police.
Thank you in advance for your consideration and we the petitioners are available to answer any questions you might have or supply any further information.
