The Issue

As an avid player and owner of numerous digital PlayStation games across PS4 and PS5, I am deeply frustrated by Sony's recent policy change that shackles my purchased games with a 30-day timer. Despite having rightfully bought these games with the expectation of lifelong access, I am now forced to validate my ownership every month online, or risk losing access entirely.

This policy not only undermines the principle of ownership but also diminishes the gaming experience for customers like myself who have invested in Sony's ecosystem. Physical game buyers remain unaffected, so why are digital game purchasers left to grapple with this additional burden?

Sony claims that this is to combat piracy, but it feels like an infringement on customer rights. Digital rights management shouldn’t slap draconian restrictions on loyal customers under the guise of security. We, as loyal consumers who have invested substantially in Sony’s digital platform, have a right to expect uninterrupted access to our purchases.

Moreover, this policy disproportionately affects gamers with limited or unreliable internet access, those who play while traveling, and people in remote areas. It effectively locks out users from their collection, punishing them for circumstances beyond their control.

We need Sony to see the value in its relationships with dedicated customers. A more balanced approach is required, where anti-piracy measures do not come at the cost of alienating or disenfranchising its user base.

We propose that Sony abolishes the 30-day timer requirement for all purchased digital games. Instead, Sony could employ more consumer-friendly solutions, like less frequent verification or offline mode functionality that respects the consumer’s ability to use their legally purchased product.

Sony has an opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to gamers by removing this timer or offering more flexible validation mechanisms. We call upon Sony to respect the ownership rights of digital consumers and align its policies with the fair usage expectation.

Sign this petition to urge Sony to protect digital game ownership and stop punishing those who have supported its platform with loyalty and passion.
