Stop Snowplows from Blocking Driveways in Kitchener & Waterloo

The Issue

The struggle is real:

The plow goes by, and you are trapped.

We’ve all been there. You spend an hour clearing your driveway, only to watch a city plow drive past and push a heavy, frozen wall of ice and snow right back across your entrance.

In Kitchener and Waterloo, this "windrow" isn't just a frustration—it is a barrier to our safety and freedom.

Why this needs to change immediately:

🚑 Emergency Safety: A blocked driveway can delay an ambulance or prevent a resident from leaving during an emergency. Minutes matter.
👵 Accessibility: For seniors and people with disabilities, these frozen ridges are often impossible to clear, leaving vulnerable residents isolated in their own homes.
🛑 Unfair Burden: Residents shouldn't have to risk injury lifting heavy ice chunks just to get to work or drop kids off at school after the city has "cleared" the road.

The Solution: Technology over Tradition

We are asking the City Councils of Kitchener and Waterloo to upgrade their winter fleet. The technology already exists to stop this. By using hydraulic gates (windrow eliminators) on plows, operators can temporarily stop the flow of snow while passing a driveway.

It Works Elsewhere

We are not asking for the impossible.

Neighboring cities in the GTA—like Vaughan, Richmond Hill, and Markham—already provide windrow-clearing services. They have prioritized the well-being of their taxpayers. It is time for KW to do the same.

Our Demand

We, the undersigned, call on the Kitchener and Waterloo City Councils to:

Modify or upgrade plow equipment to minimize windrows.
Prioritize accessibility in all future winter maintenance contracts.

Please sign to help us clear the way for a safer, more accessible winter.
