The Issue

Like many others, I have used Snapchat as more than just a fun app to send photos or videos. Over the years, it has become a time capsule of my life, filled with irreplaceable memories especially of family members with whom I've created lasting bonds. These memories, spanning over a decade, capture intimate moments that I treasure and look back on often. For many of us, Snapchat isn't just an app; it's a digital photo album that holds monumental, sentimental value.

Recently, Snapchat introduced the policy of charging users a monthly fee to access these 'memories'. It's alarming that Snapchat is monetizing on users' personal data, treating our stored memories as on-demand content. For an app that prides itself on being user-friendly and freely accessible, it's disheartening to see Snapchat follow a path that feels unprofessional and exploitative.

Snapchat has always been synonymous with spontaneity and sharing everyday moments. Users like me have entrusted this platform with fragments of our lives, expecting Snapchat would treat our data ethically and respect our trust. Instead of treating our memories like another revenue stream, Snapchat could explore other avenues to finance their services without imposing a cost on the users' sentimental data.

We believe that memories, much like photographs stored on a camera roll, should be a basic feature of the platform and not a premium offer. We urge Snapchat to reconsider this approach and look towards alternative solutions, like advertisement-based models, to sustain its services.

I invite you to stand with us to protect our memories and maintain the free and inclusive nature of Snapchat. Please sign this petition to demand Snapchat remove the monthly fees for accessing our cherished memories.
