Stop Small hamster cages

The Issue

PetSmart has started selling the “tiny tails, small pet cages'' These cages are unsafe to hamsters and here are a few reasons why: They are way too small, they are colorful and marketed for kids entertainment and not what's best for the hamster, and they do not provide space for enough bedding and enrichment that a hamster needs. First, a hamster needs to have 450 sq inches of space minimum, and the largest tiny tale cage is only 320 sq inches, Not having a big enough cage means your hamster can create bad habits such as: Bar biting, monkey barring, Pacing, biting humans, back flipping, and destroying items in their cage (i.e. Toys, nest, burrow tunnels) A hamster needs a big cage so you can have the proper sized wheel, and the enrichment that it needs to live a fulfilling life. Hamsters are active animals so naturally they need lots of space to burn energy, and in a small cage they cannot run, and they certainly won't have the required space to burrow (10 inches or more for Syrian hamsters). Secondly, The tiny tales cage is marketed for children, these cages come with crosswords, stickers, and games. They are meant to all connect and create a “village” for children to play with. This is not humane for a hamster, these companies are only thinking of what's going to sell the cage whether or not it's healthy for the hamster. Colorful cages that have fun designs like castles or cozy homes are clearly only marketed towards children so their hamster can have a “fun space” while truly it could torture the hamster. Last, These hamster cages do not provide space for extras like enough bedding and enrichment. Tiny tales cages only come with 6 inch wheels, but the minimum recommended size of wheel for a hamster is 8 inches or more, and you cannot fit that size of wheel inside of this cage. A hamster needs lots of enrichment in its cage, this would include a sand bath for digging and grooming, multiple treats and/or chew toys, multiple hides, different sections for hay and different bedding styles, and platforms for your hamster so they can explore. Unfortunately, the Tiny Tales hamster cage is too small to provide these things for a hamster which can lead to cage rage as mentioned above. In conclusion Tiny Tales cages are tiny and in-humane for hamsters to live a healthy and enriched life.
