Stop Skin Misdiagnosis - Help us help the NHS Make Dermatology Work for Every Skin Tone

The Issue

No one should be misdiagnosed because of their skin colour. Yet today, thousands of people with Black, Brown and other diverse skin tones are missing out on accurate care. This isn’t just a statistic, it could be you, your family or someone you love.

Did you know 62% of melanomas in Black patients are misdiagnosed, compared to just 13% in white patients? Less than 4% of skin condition images online show darker skin, making it harder for everyone to get the right diagnosis.

My own daughter was given unnecessary, harsh medication because her symptoms didn’t match what’s in the textbooks. This isn’t just about numbers-it’s about real people, real families.

We’re asking the NHS to partner with Symptom Spectrum to bring free, AI-powered skin clinics to communities across the UK. By supporting this petition, you’re helping to build a fairer, more accurate NHS for everyone.

Add your name if you believe everyone deserves equal care. Share this with friends and family-your voice can help make the NHS fairer for all.

Invisible Skin - When Doctors Can't See What's Killing You

What if your child was given liver-toxic drugs she never needed, simply because her skin tone didn't match medical textbooks?

This happened to my daughter. It could happen to your family next.

The Diagnosis That Never Was

My two-month-old daughter developed a facial rash. The doctor immediately prescribed steroid cream.

We hesitated. Thank God we did-it was just early teething.

But when she turned two, mysterious spots appeared on her scalp. This time, doctors showed us images of "kerion"-all on white skin-and ordered liver-toxic prescription meds.

I held my screaming toddler through traumatic blood tests. She endured two rounds of powerful medication.

Then the lab results finally arrived... No fungal infection existed. She never needed those drugs in the first place.

This Isn't Just Our Story, It's Your Risk

  • If you have darker skin, you have a 62% chance of melanoma misdiagnosis (vs. 13% for white patients)
  • If you're raising children of colour, they're studying from textbooks where less than 4% of images show skin like theirs
  • If your loved one has dark skin and develops cancer, their survival rate drops by 22%

Every day, someone's mother, father, child or friend suffers because medicine doesn't "see" them.

The Solution Is Here... If We Demand It

Symptom Spectrum's (ourskin.io) an AI platform is trained on diverse skin tones to provide accurate diagnoses that reflect how conditions actually appear on all skin colours.

But we need NHS support to make it accessible to everyone.

What We're Asking
We need your signature to urge the NHS Trust to

  • Partner with Symptom Spectrum for free skin clinics in our community
  • Host these clinics in existing NHS facilities
  • Allow anonymous data collection to train AI that sees everyone equally

Why Your Signature Matters Today?
Doctors openly admit they're less confident diagnosing conditions on darker skin. Medical students are creating their own diverse image banks because the disparity shocked them.

This isn't just about healthcare equity-it's about saving lives.

Your signature could be the difference between a correct diagnosis and a deadly mistake for someone you love.

Please 🙏🏽 Sign this petition to stand for equitable healthcare and make a tangible difference in our community.

Because everyone deserves to be seen.

Shocking Facts 😳

⚠️ UK doctors misdiagnosed melanoma in Black patients 62% of the time in one study, compared to just 13% for white patients

📚 Fewer than 5% of images in dermatology textbooks feature dark skin, leaving doctors unprepared to diagnose conditions on diverse skin tones.

📉 The 5-year survival rate for skin cancer is dramatically lower for Black people (70%) compared to white people (92%) in the US, largely due to later diagnosis.

🩺 Doctors admit they’re less confident diagnosing psoriasis in Black patients than in white patients, leading to misdiagnosis as ringworm, eczema or even syphilis.

🔬 Medical students at the University of Bristol were so shocked by the disparity in skin cancer diagnosis that they created DermSpectrum to build the UK’s most diverse skin image bank.

❗ A study of GPs found they were almost 9 times more likely to misdiagnose melanoma in Black patients (62%) versus white patients (7%) in worst-case scenarios.
