Put STOP signs at the intersections of Lefferts Pl. with Grand and St. James

The Issue

The intersections of Lefferts Pl. with Grand Ave. and Saint James Pl. are dangerous for people in our neighborhood, and our local leaders have failed to fix the problem for years. These intersections sit in a quiet residential neighborhood, right next to a school, but cars speed right through without regard for people, families, children, and pets crossing the street. The intersections are sandwiched between the heavily trafficked thoroughfares of Fulton St. and Atlantic Ave., and motorists speed down these residential streets as they try to beat the stoplights at Atlantic. Right now, they have no reason not to.

There is a yellow yield sign, but cars do not yield.

There is a crosswalk (where cars are supposed to stop for pedestrians) but the cars don't stop.

We need STOP signs to keep our community safe.

For years, numerous members of our community have requested STOP signs via NYC DOT's official channels, and by asking community leaders for help, but we have gotten nowhere. The DOT asserts that several years ago, they determined that "traffic conditions did not meet nationally recognized traffic engineering safety standards required for installation of a traffic control device" and that "conditions have not changed since the last study was completed," but they have never explained what this means or released their findings. NYC DOT: Come take a walk in our neighborhood at rush hour and see if you feel safe!

Everyone knows a scary story about these intersections, or has had a near miss, or an accident. Cars have struck and injured pedestrians multiple times. Will you be the next victim?

Enough is enough. We need STOP signs!
