The Issue

In comic books the costumes of female characters are designed for the male gaze and objectify women by displaying their bodies for the pleasure of men. There is also a severe lack of body diversity in comic books, generally large busts and big hip to waist ratio. This makes comic books sexist and unwelcoming to female readers.

By creating costumes which serve to convey the character's emotional qualities as opposed to the male gaze, women will feel more respected by the comic book industry and artistic flare in costume creation will flourish. An increase in body diversity in comics will welcome new female readers since there will be characters that look like them opposed to how society wants them to look and this will prevent the comic book industries fuelling of unrealistic beauty standards. For this petition I am not asking that we never have women in comics with the body type stated above or revealing clothing but that more body diversity appears in comics and costumes are designed to serve the character's expression and not sex appeal.

I believe that artists and writers should be encouraged by publishers to include more body diversity and character focused costume design for female characters.

The comic book industry will continue to have sexist costume and character design if we do not make it known that we do not want it.  Increasing body diversity and non-sexist costumes will create a comic book environment that invites women and is focused on art rather than sales.
