Stop Sexism at Bandera

The Issue

As a Woman who goes to Bandera High School, I’ve received so much criticism about just being a girl. Bandera is supposed to be “We are One” until it’s someone who dosen’t fit the characteristics of a white, country guy. In my two years of going to Bandera High I have received disgusting comments from the staff about what I wear/look like even from the GIRL STAFFS. Now I don’t know about you but being told that my bra straps are showing and to pull up my shirt by an adult makes me severely uncomfortable. Since the beginning of my sophomore year i have been treated differently by this one specific teacher. The first day they made me go up to them just for them to tell me to pull up my shirt so my boobs weren’t showing. They were never showing in the first place and even so why were they looking at my body that way. My second incident is when this teacher would pick on me for my hair color and piercings. Yes having colored hair and piercings is out of the dress code but it was the beginning of the year. Non stop that teacher would tell the vice principals about my hair, getting me in trouble as I was trying to fix it. Another incident of was when I wore a shirt that was stretched out so it didn’t go over my shoulder. This teacher then decided to pull me away and out of all the other normal toned shirts they pull out a pink one and make me change into it. Not to mention the rest of the day no one cared for my clothing, only them. Most recently me and my friend were searched by the same teacher because we were “suspicious” for being in the locker room bathrooms. They made us grab are things and get searched by another teacher. It was the most uncomfortable experience I’ve ever had at school. They took everything out of my bag and made me pull my bra out and shake it. I feel like stuff like that isn’t allowed not to mention the teacher touched my waist band. I had no chance to call my parents let them know about the situation I was pressured and came back traumatized from past experiences I had as a child. It made me feel disgusted and the whole time after me and my friend got cleared, the teacher stared at us the rest of the period making both me and my friend uncomfortable. Today was my stopping point after I was suspended and given in school suspension for having an AirPod in for the state test. I do realize that was a mistake of mine but I know I was not the only one doing the same and to be the one picked out of everyone else is unfair. Did they let me continue the test in a different room. No. Now they are making me have summer school over an AirPod. And to mention the only reason I had my AirPod is so I could concentrate on my test without getting distracted. This school has treated me and so many other girls horribly at our time at Bandera and I want to get this information out to help stop this shit.
