The Issue

The Merrimack River, vital to communities in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, is facing a severe pollution crisis due to sewage contamination. As someone who lives in Merrimac, Massachusetts, this issue is deeply personal and urgent. Our community depends on the Merrimack River as a primary water source. The water that flows through our taps—whether for drinking, cooking, or bathing—derives directly from this river. Imagining our daily lives entwined with the harsh reality of polluted water is alarming and unacceptable.

Recent studies confirm that significant amounts of untreated or partially treated sewage are being discharged into the Merrimack River, threatening public health and the environment. According to the Merrimack River Watershed Council, overflows are estimated to occur more than 400 times a year, releasing hazardous materials like pathogens and other pollutants into the river. This not only endangers aquatic life but also poses serious risks to all who rely on the river for recreational and domestic purposes.

The consequences are becoming increasingly evident, as we've witnessed detrimental environmental impacts, including the decline of fish populations and the degradation of natural habitats. Public health too is at risk, with increased cases of waterborne illnesses being reported in areas adjacent to the river.

It's crucial that both Massachusetts and New Hampshire commit to upgrading sewage infrastructure to significantly reduce these overflows. Solutions include investing in advanced wastewater treatment facilities and creating robust overflow prevention systems. Additionally, increasing transparency about when and where these overflows occur will empower residents to make informed decisions.

By harnessing community support and pressuring local governments and environmental agencies to prioritize this issue, we can protect the Merrimack River. Your signature can help amplify our demand for cleaner water and safer communities. And possibly get the Merrimack Watershed council help with the wastewater treatment facilities. Sign this petition to advocate for immediate changes to safeguard our precious river and the health of all who depend on it. Join the fight to preserve the Merrimack River for current and future generations.
