The Issue

My wife and I used to love spending our summer weekends by the sea in Deal, Walmer and Kingsdown, in Kent, immersing ourselves in the refreshing water surrounded by nature's beauty. However, in recent years, our beloved local beach has turned from a place of joy and relaxation into a source of concern and distress. My wife no longer wants to swim in our local sea due to the alarming increase in sewage dumping.

Recent reports have shown that the water companies, instead of safeguarding our natural resources, have been responsible for allowing sewage to seep into our waters. The damage it has caused to our marine ecosystems is not only devastating to local biodiversity but poses a significant threat to public health.

For years, corporations have prioritized profits over people, inadequately maintaining the infrastructure needed to prevent such environmental disasters. In 2021 alone, private water companies in England were responsible for releasing sewage into streams, rivers, and coastal waters over 400,000 times, compromising the quality of the water that we, the public, should be able to enjoy.

The government's role in this crisis has been equally disappointing. Instead of holding these corporations accountable, insufficient action has been taken to protect our environment and preserve water safety. The lack of transparency and inadequate investment in sustainable and modern infrastructure have left our waters vulnerable.

Returning the control of water resources to public ownership is not merely a nostalgic wish; it is a robust, strategic necessity. Evidence from countries with publicly owned water systems shows that they tend to have better environmental records and higher consumer satisfaction rates, as profits are reinvested into infrastructure improvements and environmental protections, rather than shareholders' pockets.

This call for change is urgent. We must urge the government and water companies to acknowledge these issues truthfully and prioritize safeguarding our natural resources. By investing in repair and modernization of the sewage and water systems, we can restore the purity of our waters, revitalize our ecosystems, and once again take joy in swimming in our local seas.

Join us in demanding accountability, transparency, and a future where our waters are clean and safe. Please sign this petition to stop sewage dumping and put water back in the hands of the public.
