Growing up in Canada, I have always been proud of our nation's values of inclusivity, generosity, and compassion. These values have painted our global image as a kind and giving nation. However, as I watch the government allocate significant amounts of taxpayer money to foreign nations without consulting its citizens, I feel a deep concern. These unconsented allocations seem to overlook the increasingly urgent needs within our own borders.

Every day, I witness the growing struggle of Canadians dealing with homelessness. According to the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness, there are over 235,000 Canadians experiencing homelessness each year. With thousands of families struggling to find a safe place to sleep, it seems inconsistent to send funds abroad without first ensuring that our own citizens have a roof over their heads.

Furthermore, the high cost of living and food insecurity are pressing issues right at home. Statistics Canada reports that 10% of Canadian households faced food insecurity in 2022, impacting nearly 4 million people. This number is unacceptable considering the resources available within our wealthy nation. Our federal aid should prioritize investments in food security programs to ensure all Canadians can put meals on their tables.

Our healthcare system also cries out for better funding. With long wait times and under-resourced facilities, many Canadians are left without timely medical care, which is a fundamental right. The Canadian Institute for Health Information noted an increase in wait times for treatments, with many patients experiencing longer periods of uncertainty and pain. Redirecting even a fraction of our funds back home could significantly improve these conditions.

Additionally, with increasingly common natural disasters such as wildfires that continuously threaten Canadian homes and livelihoods, effective funding and support for disaster management must be seen as an urgent priority. Addressing these natural crises requires immediate and robust financial support.

I am not against international aid, but I strongly believe any such assistance should come with the informed consent of Canadians. We must prioritize the needs of our own citizens who are struggling before extending a helping hand elsewhere. The federal government's task is to reflect the will and protect the interests of its people.
