Stop selling bison from Antelope Island

The Issue

I recently visited Antelope Island, a place of stunning natural beauty teeming with diverse wildlife. However, this pristine experience was overshadowed by the troubling knowledge that many bison, majestic and integral to the ecosystem, are sold, sometimes for slaughter. This practice not only results in the unnecessary loss of these great creatures but also disrupts their social structures, causing trauma and stress to the entire herd.

Bison are not just iconic symbols of the American West but are also highly social animals that form complex herds. The current practice of rounding up and separating these animals for sale is distressing and traumatic, affecting their well-being and threatening the natural balance of their community. There is a humane alternative to this: managing the bison population through sterilization and other non-lethal methods.

Sterilization would be a more compassionate and sustainable solution, allowing us to maintain the ecological balance and preserve the integrity of bison herds. This method would prevent the disruption of family units and ensure that every bison lives out its life free from exploitation.

Utah’s State Parks should be leaders in wildlife conservation and should prioritize non-lethal methods of population control. By ending the sale of bison and adopting sterilization practices, we set a precedent for how wildlife conservation can harmonize with humane ethics.

Let us stand together to urge Utah State Parks to adopt these humane management strategies for the bison on Antelope Island. Together, we can ensure the preservation of this majestic species for future generations while respecting their natural right to live free from undue harm.
