The Issue

In the St. Vrain Valley School District (SVVSD), the internet filter tool, Securly, has been increasingly blocking access to many web pages that are crucial for educational growth and research. As a concerned student in this district, I've encountered numerous instances where Securly has unjustly blocked educational websites that could provide invaluable information for both my peers and myself. This frequent interruption hampers our learning experience and limits our potential to explore and understand various academic subjects effectively.

For instance, several online resources that offer supplementary materials for subjects like science, mathematics, history, and literature have been rendered inaccessible. This issue is not only about convenience but also about fairness. Students of SVVSD deserve the right to access all materials integral to their learning process, especially when these resources are purely educational and hold no harmful content.

Rather than encouraging exploration and self-directed learning, the current restrictions in place demotivate students by creating unnecessary hurdles in seeking knowledge beyond textbook limitations. Numerous studies have shown that students benefit immensely from a broader range of resources that allow them to nurture curiosity and initiative in learning.

According to the American Library Association, students who have access to a wider range of learning resources show increased academic performance and cognitive skills. Keeping this in mind, it is crucial that Securly's filtering system is reviewed and adjusted to ensure students in the SVVSD can engage with valuable online educational resources freely.

We propose that SVVSD, in collaboration with Securly, reviews the current list of blocked sites with an open and flexible approach. This would ensure any blocked site is thoroughly assessed for its educational value. Introducing a feedback mechanism could also be useful, allowing students and educators to report unjustly blocked pages for immediate reassessment.

By signing this petition, you are supporting a fairer, more comprehensive online learning environment for all students in SVVSD. Your support is essential in helping us lift unnecessary barriers to our education and ensure access to all necessary educational content. Let's work together for a better learning future.
