Stop seal clubbing

The Issue

Seal clubbing, a cruel and inhumane practice, continues to occur in several regions, notably in Canada. This gruesome activity involves the brutal killing of seals, often leaving them defenseless against their attackers. Every year, hundreds of thousands of seal pups are bludgeoned to death for their pelts, oil, and meat. This is not just a tragedy for the seals but also for the ecosystem, as it disrupts the natural balance of marine life.

Statistics from the Canadian government show that over 98% of the seals killed are younger than three months old. These pups, sometimes as young as a few weeks, are targeted before they even have a chance to migrate or learn to fend for themselves. The commercial seal hunt is the largest slaughter of marine mammals on the planet, with approximately 400,000 harp seals being killed in Canada annually.

Numerous animal welfare organizations, including the Humane Society International and the World Wildlife Fund, have documented extensive evidence of the suffering inflicted on seals during these hunts. Independent veterinarians and observers have frequently reported cases of seals being skinned while still conscious, highlighting the extreme cruelty involved.

Economically, the seal hunt is not as significant as it once was. With the decline in demand for seal products and many countries banning the import of seal goods, the industry is now heavily subsidized by the government. Redirecting these subsidies towards sustainable and more humane employment opportunities for communities dependent on the seal hunt could stimulate local economies and create a future where both humans and marine life can thrive.

Our goal is to urge the Canadian government and other regions where seal clubbing occurs to enforce stricter regulations or to ban the practice altogether. By doing so, they can help protect seal populations and preserve marine biodiversity.

We request the support of animal lovers, environmentalists, and anyone who believes in compassionate and sustainable living to sign this petition. Your signature can help push for legislative changes that save thousands of seals from this needless cruelty. Please sign and share this petition to make your voice heard and end seal clubbing once and for all.
