The Issue

I live on Stewart Avenue in Lincoln Park, directly across from Ruby Recycling — a large industrial operation that is running under the wrong zoning classification and endangering the health and safety of families, children, and local businesses.   Ruby Recycling was grandfathered in under the old zoning for Dix Auto Parts, which operated under a Municipal Business District (MBD) — a classification meant for light commercial use like auto parts sales. But Ruby is not running a parts store. They are conducting full-scale industrial operations: dismantling vehicles, shredding scrap metal, draining hazardous fluids, and running crushers and loaders every day — right across from homes and Crowley Elementary School.
This level of activity should be regulated under M1 or M2 zoning (light to heavy industrial), which is not permitted in residential areas under standard zoning ordinances. The City of Lincoln Park has not taken any public steps to correct this violation or protect nearby residents.
As a result, our neighborhood is suffering. Residents have reported: Frequent headaches
Upper respiratory infections Sinus problems
Asthma and bronchitis
Constant coughing and throat irritation
Nosebleeds
Unexplained health issues affecting both adults and children     Every day, our homes, cars, and yards are coated in metallic dust and debris. We can’t safely open our windows. Our children are breathing this air. Crowley Elementary has even sent home letters warning parents that emissions from the facility are affecting outdoor activity and student wellness.   This isn’t just inconvenient — it’s a failure in zoning enforcement and environmental safety.   I’m asking for your support. Please sign this petition to demand that the City of Lincoln Park stop allowing Ruby Recycling to operate under improper zoning, conduct an environmental investigation, and finally prioritize the health and safety of our community.
