The Issue

Dear APSARA Authority and Cambodia Forestry Administration,

We, the undersigned, are writing to express our grave concerns regarding the activities of an individual named Kunthea and her husband the cameraman Ros Phearom within Angkor Park. Their actions are causing significant harm to the well-being and natural behavior of the abandoned pet monkeys in the area, who come from abusive ownerships and whose character is already seriously damaged.

Kunthea has been exploiting these monkeys for personal gain, provoking expressions of suffering and fights, to generate content for social media platforms. She engages in activities that are not only unethical but also detrimental to the monkeys’ health and psychological state. Her actions include provoking the monkeys to fight by provoking their jealousy either over her lap or over one bottle of milk, abusing them physically and emotionally, and sexually molesting them. She has also been observed separating newborn monkeys from their mothers and forcing them onto other females, which disrupts their natural familial bonds and social structures. Ros Phearom was caught on camera sexually exciting a male monkey.

This constant abusive interference by Kunthea prevents the abandoned abused monkeys from surviving in their environment free from abuse, from getting over their previous abuse and from healing their damaged character.

The presence of Kunthea and of husband Ros Phearom, and their continuous exploitation of these monkeys not only violate ethical standards but also pose a significant threat to the overall well-being and long-term survival of these animals. Kunthea’s abusive actions are creating a cycle of dependency to abuse and distress, making it impossible for the monkeys to heal from previous abuse, and thrive.

In light of these serious concerns, we urge APSARA to take decisive action to address this issue. Specifically, we request the following measures:

 - Prohibit Kunthea and Ros from filming within Angkor Park and posting any content involving the monkeys on social media platforms. This will prevent further abuse of the monkeys for entertainment purposes.

- Consider measures to restrict or prohibit Ros and Kunthea’s access to Angkor Park altogether, if possible, to ensure the safety and well-being of the monkeys and allow them to recover and survive without human abuse.

- Implement strict monitoring and enforcement measures to prevent similar incidents of animal exploitation and disturbance in the future, ensuring that Angkor Park remains a sanctuary where monkeys can thrive undisturbed by human abuse.

By taking decisive action to remove individuals who exploit and harm animals for personal gain, APSARA can uphold its commitment to wildlife protection and ensure that Angkor Park remains a safe and nurturing environment for all its inhabitants.

We appreciate your attention to this urgent matter and trust that APSARA and Forest ministry will act swiftly to address these concerns and safeguard the welfare of the monkeys in Angkor Park.

Thank you for your dedication to preserving our natural heritage and protecting vulnerable wildlife species.

Sincerely,
Angkor Park’s monkeys fans
