Help to Save 44 Trees, More Hall & Annex at the University of Washington Seattle

Help to Save 44 Trees, More Hall & Annex at the University of Washington Seattle
The Issue
Dear UW Regents Chairman Patrick Shanahan,
The plan for a 2nd Computer Science and Engineering building, CSE II, to be situated north of More Hall, south of Mechanical Engineering, east of Stevens Way, and west of Mason Road contradicts the 2003 Campus Master Plan which is currently in effect by Seattle city ordinance 121688 until the year 2018.
The current 15-year Campus Master Plan calls for enhanced open space and access to east campus in the area north of More Hall and south of the Mechanical Engineering Building. The current master plan is in effect until a new master plan is developed and approved by the Seattle City Council, anticipated in 2018.
Multiple alternate site locations for CSE II are available and are fully consistent with the 2003 Campus Master Plan.
The University of Washington is out of compliance with Seattle city ordinance 121688, requiring annual updates for the Campus Master Plan; said annual updates are available for calendar years 2003 through 2013, but are notably lacking for calendar years 2014 and 2015. None of the available Campus Master Plan updates for calendar years 2003 through 2013 provide any information on plans for CSE II at any location on the University of Washington Seattle campus.
We, the undersigned students, faculty, staff, community members, University of Washington friends and alumni, hereby call for the following:
(A) Preservation of the 44 trees including 24 exceptional trees situated north of More Hall, south of Mechanical Engineering, east of Stevens Way, and west of Montlake Boulevard;
(B) A stay on demolition of More Hall Annex, aka the University of Washington’s historic Nuclear Reactor Building; and
(C) Another plan for CSE II that is consistent with the 2003 Campus Master Plan and that does not require demolition of the nationally-registered, historic More Hall Annex.
