The Issue

Moose Lake, MN, is a tranquil community that cherishes its natural beauty and tight-knit community values. However, our town is now facing a significant threat that compels us to take immediate and decisive action. Plans are underway to open a Bitcoin mining data center right in our backyard, and the consequences could be devastating for our community's health and environment.

Revolve Labs, the company proposing this facility was previously known as Bit 49 Inc; which seems to have changed to avoid the scrutiny attached to their prior name. Despite pushback, they successfully built a facility in Glencoe, MN. The consequences of that facility have been felt by the residents of Glencoe. Following, they have unsuccessfully attempted to build data centers in Windom, MN and Mountain Lake, MN. This facility is slated to be constructed alarmingly close to residential areas and the Moose Lake Correctional Facility and Minnesota Sex Offender Program (MSOP). Such proximity poses significant physical and mental health risks to not only the offenders and workers at these institutions but also to the nearby residents.

Bitcoin mining is known for consuming exorbitant amounts of energy. According to the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance, Bitcoin mining globally consumes more electricity annually than some entire countries, such as Argentina. The introduction of such an energy-intensive operation in Moose Lake could result in higher energy costs, strained resources, and potentially introduce harmful levels of pollution that could affect the air and water quality in our community. This exposure can cause respiratory issues and other associated health problems.

Data center operations are notorious for their high energy consumption and resulting environmental impact. The loud noise from the machinery at these centers can be an incessant disturbance to our daily lives. Additionally, the massive heat output and noise pollution has it's own consequences. Data centers such as the one proposed to be built in Moose Lake are known to generate harmful levels of infrasound. Infrasound is not audible to the human ear, but can be extremely detrimental to the well being of those continuously exposed to it.

Furthermore, the construction and operation of this data center threaten the peaceful and natural environment Moose Lake is known for. The increased industrial activity diminishes the charm of our community, potentially lowering property values and deterring new residents from moving to our beautiful town, which relies on a harmonious balance between progress and preservation.

There are more environmentally friendly ways to incorporate technology into our community without compromising the health and well-being of its inhabitants. Moreover, our community thrives on local businesses and tourism, sectors that would likely suffer as the peaceful charm of Moose Lake is overshadowed by industrial activity and the character of our beloved town could change irrevocably.

We urge local authorities, including city planners and environmental regulatory bodies, to block the development of this bitcoin mining data center. A thorough assessment of its environmental impact and consideration of alternate sites are crucial steps before approving such potentially hazardous projects. Our community deserves better.

Your voice is essential in safeguarding the future of Moose Lake. By signing this petition, you stand against those who seek to take advantage of our resources and uphold the values that make Moose Lake a special place to live. Let's ensure our community remains a healthy and beautiful place for generations to come. Please sign and share this petition widely to amplify our message.
