Stop Requiring Parking Permits For General Parking

The Issue

Humbly, I ask you, the student body/staff/coaches/alumni, to sign this petition to make General Parking free and accessible to the students of The College of Idaho.

The College of Idaho is often described as the "Harvard of The West", with a $40,000 per year tuition, students receive the best education Idaho has to offer. However, despite the amount of money students pay in tuition, Campus Safety has made it a priority to squeeze every last penny from their students. Starting from an email on September 4th, 2023, every single car parked on campus is required to have a parking permit. Although this is understandable for the cramped dorm parking lots, this rule even extends to the extensive and wide open General Parking lot. For as long as General Parking has existed at The College of Idaho, it has been a free and accessible form of parking a commuter's car safely while they attend their classes. Campus Safety is now requiring that every student who wishes to park in General has a $95 dollar parking permit.

If that pricetag for the permit wasn't bad enough, if you are caught parking in General without the permit, you will be fined $50 dollars, which is a 100% markup from what the tickets were last year.

The College of Idaho is a prestigious and expensive College to attend. This change in parking permit rulings is a grievous error on the part of Campus Safety and gives the impression that our campus is desperate for money.
