The landscape is being decimated! For what??? NO ONE can give us logical answers. Trees that are 50, 100, and even 300 years old are being destroyed. There is no way this project is worth destroying 100-300 years of cultural and natural history!!!
Residents and visitors are shocked by the landscape and habitat devastation this project is creating. Animal habitats are being destroyed. The project area is home to white tail rabbits, jack rabbits, deer, numerous species of birds, quail, partridge, turkey, coyotes, and turtles. Now, these animals do not have a place to take shelter. Already, there are significantly fewer songbirds because the trees have been removed. We do not see the deer families that used to graze and play in this area.
This project has been hidden and misrepresented. We have not been told the truth about what is going on.
There has been no communication about this project. No signs. There is no logic. Someone said they are removing invasive species, yet the trees that are being relocated are the elderberry trees. Elderberries are native; they are not invasive species!!! In fact, the elderberries were planted here as part of a flood control mitigation project. These mitigation projects are supposed to be permanent, but this project is uprooting all the elderberry trees and negating previous flood mitigation projects (and all the money spent on previous project was wasted. The landscape devastation has been magnified exponentially compared to the previous, wasted mitigation project.
Another example of illogical choices is that some trees (a few) can stay, but 100+ year-old trees 15 inches away are being cut down and destroyed!!!
Our taxes (federal & state) are funding this project, yet no one knew this project was going to happen until they put up a fence one day. They did not post any signs about what was going on. They did not give any opportunity for residents and taxpayers to input about this project. This is not right. We certainly do no see any logic to justify the total devastation that is happening.
We demand answers. We demand to see reason and logic and any research that was done to justify this project. We demand to know who made these decisions. We demand to see EVERY study that was done to justify this environmental brutality.
Why do we need to take action against this illogical environmental brutality? Because they are planning to devastate more areas along the American River Parkway (between Howe Ave. & Watt Ave.) that thousands of people enjoy each day of the year.
We are demanding transparency, accountability, respect from planning authorities. We demand clear, consistent, and thorough communication from the top decision makers all the way down to the local level.
Please sign our petition to demand that NO MORE trees be removed from the American River Parkway.
