We strongly oppose  cutting down over 100  mature trees (that are protected by the town tree law) for a proposed bike lane planned to span from Woodstock to Bearsville. There are a total of 200 protected trees  from Sled Hill to Bearsville reported by the Woodstock Tree Committee. This is not just a plea to save trees; it is a call to preserve an integral part of our community's natural landscape.

The proposed bike lane brings with it a financial burden to the town—an expenditure of $1.7 million dollars, which appears to primarily benefit a group of bike enthusiasts, while the wider community must bear the consequences.

Our town has always taken pride in its beautiful country roads and highways. These trees are also home to various wildlife species and play a critical role in maintaining biodiversity. The destruction of these trees for a project that does not serve the majority of our community is wrong! 

In addition to the bike lane, the Complete Streets initiative now proposes to incorporate sidewalks along this same stretch of state highway. While infrastructure improvements can be beneficial, we believe that such measures should not come at the expense of our environment and the community on a  state highway. 

Find alternate solutions like fixing sidewalks and painting a bike lane on the current road.  We don’t need a sidewalk on a state highway!

E bikes are not allowed on the bike lane according to county officials. They will have to use the road. They also stated invoking Eminent Domain will be necessary.  

We urge county and state officials to reconsider this proposal by Complete Streets, emphasizing solutions that promote sustainable development and reflect the interests of ALL residents in this community.

Alternatives should be explored—ones that foster both progress and preservation.
