Stop Racial Discrimination and Unlawful Actions Against Immigrants in Cyprus

The Issue

Yesterday, a man tragically lost his life, jumping from the fifth floor of his building to escape an immigration raid. He was not a criminal; he was merely seeking safety. Yet, due to the policies of the government and actions of the police, he died. The situation is escalating daily.

We are immigrants who contribute to society by paying taxes and social insurance without taking any financial aid from the government. Despite this, we are treated unjustly and live in constant fear due to rampant discrimination.

In Cyprus today, immigrants are subjected to racial prejudice by both law enforcement agencies and governmental bodies. There have been numerous instances where people have been abducted daily with houses being raided unlawfully. This is happening while funds continue flowing into Cyprus from the European Union - funds that should be used for integration efforts rather than fostering division.

The media has largely ignored our plight, leaving us voiceless in our struggle for justice and equality. Furthermore, Europe seems indifferent towards our predicament which exacerbates our sense of isolation.

One of our primary demands is the removal of the five-year ban on asylum seekers, which serves as a barrier to their integration and livelihood opportunities. We firmly believe that asylum seekers should be granted the right to change their status to pursue work or educational endeavors, fostering their independence and contributing positively to society.

We call upon international human rights organizations as well as European Union institutions to intervene urgently in this matter before more lives are lost or ruined due to these discriminatory practices.

Please sign this petition if you believe that every individual deserves respect regardless of their nationality or immigration status; if you believe that no one should live in fear because they sought refuge or better opportunities abroad; if you believe that it's time for change - not just for us but also future generations who may find themselves facing similar circumstances.
