Stop Rachel Reeves from imposing a new EV stealth tax

Stop Rachel Reeves from imposing a new EV stealth tax
The Issue
Our government, particularly our current Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, is contemplating the introduction of another stealth tax targeting electric vehicle (EV) owners. This feels like a step back, especially after efforts to position EVs as the leading choice for meeting the UK's environmental targets. Initially, EVs were heralded with incentives meant to promote their adoption. These incentives, however, have gradually diminished, leaving residents like me perplexed and concerned.
The government had previously made efforts to align EV taxes with those of traditional petrol and diesel vehicles. This alignment was purportedly in support of our "green" initiatives, enticing many citizens, including myself, to shift to cleaner and more sustainable forms of transportation. But each reduction in incentives and simultaneous increase in charging rates sends a conflicting message about the UK’s commitment to sustainable practices.
The chancellor is now planning on going further and charging EV owners an extra 3p per mile, which would be an additional £250 on average per annum.
The EV community and potential buyers need assurance and reasons to continue supporting this crucial shift from fossil fuels. Instituting a new stealth tax on EVs not only undermines these efforts but also risks alienating a burgeoning community dedicated to reducing environmental impact.
To progress towards a greener nation, we must ask the government to reconsider introducing taxes that deter individuals from making environmentally friendly choices.
We urge Rachel Reeves and our government to focus on policies that truly support our journey to a more sustainable future, rather than imposing punitive measures that obstruct progress.
Please join us in urging our leaders to commit to genuine green policies by signing this petition. Together, we can secure a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for the UK.
