The Issue

Quarrying in Montalban, Rizal has become a growing menace to our community, with severe impacts on the environment, health, and quality of life for its residents. Growing up in a neighborhood embraced by nature, I have witnessed, firsthand, the transformation of Montalban from a serene landscape to a region plagued by dust, noise, and seemingly endless truck convoys that disrupt daily living. This is deeply personal to me because it has changed the place I call home, harming its natural beauty and the health of its people.

The rapid expansion of quarrying activities has resulted in deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and erosive soil degradation that threaten agriculture and the livelihoods dependent on it. Reports from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) indicate that the excessive exploitation by these quarries has already resulted in significant land degradation and habitat destruction.

The dust and particulate matter from these operations permeate the air, leading to respiratory illnesses among vulnerable groups, especially children and the elderly. This is backed by numerous health consultations from local clinics that confirm a rise in respiratory issues linked to dust pollution.

Moreover, the noise pollution from heavy machinery and equipment disrupts daily life, affecting not just peace and tranquility but also disturbing schools and community activities essential for societal well-being. Accessibility and road safety have also deteriorated under the weight of trucks transporting extracted materials.

We aim to protect the environment and ensure a sustainable future for Montalban, and therefore call upon local government officials and relevant authorities to take urgent action. We propose the following:
1. Implement stricter regulations for quarry operations to control and monitor environmental impact.
2. Establish a designated "no quarry zone" in ecologically sensitive areas to preserve biodiversity and natural landscapes.
3. Require companies to abide by rehabilitation measures such as reforestation after quarrying projects conclude.
4. Conduct an environmental impact assessment to determine the cumulative effects of existing quarries and use this data for informed decision-making.
5. Engage with the community in open forums to openly discuss concerns, and incorporate their input into policy-making.

The well-being of Montalban hangs in the balance, and it is imperative to take decisive and collective action to safeguard our future. Please sign this petition to halt further quarrying in Montalban and secure a healthier, more sustainable environment for ourselves and generations to come.
