Stop putting down Cats and Dogs in pounds, and prosecute abusive owners!
The Issue
Imagine if your family threw you out onto the street, without a word. After you nearly starve to death, people come by, force you into a truck, and lock in a cage amongst many others. Here you are forced to lay in your own waste before you killed a few weeks later.
Unfortunately, this is the reality for millions of dogs around the globe. This should not be allowed, and all owners throwing their dogs out should be charged with animal abuse.
Every year, upwards of 2,000,000 dogs are put down because the pounds can't keep them. Even though the pounds are killing them, it’s not really their fault. Many people throughout the United States just get tired of their dogs, and literally throw them out onto the streets. Here the dogs can starve to death. If they are found by animal control, they are forcibly dragged into the trucks with wired collars. Sometimes at the pound, they’re only given a week before they are put down.
To make matters worse, almost none of the owners that threw their dogs away are prosecuted as they should be. People should not be able to do this, and many more measures should be put in place to stop it.
The fact that dogs just have to sit in cages waiting for an owner, and are killed if nobody wants them is so wrong. They shouldn't be sitting in cages anyway!
There are so many great shelters out there that make sure a dog isn't sitting in a cage all day, and that should be implemented in all shelters whether it's kill or non-kill. There should be spaces for the dogs to run, play, and socialize like in many animal shelters!
By the way, just to be clear I am saying that pounds shouldn't be putting dogs down. I got a few messages saying that if a dog is in pain or is suffering, they should be put down, and I totally agree. I am saying that pounds shouldn't put down dogs, not that they shouldn't be put down I general.
Please help by sharing this petition, rescuing a dog, or donating to Best Friends at bestfriends.org, who is trying to save dogs and turn pounds into non-kill.
