The U.S. military required many transgender service members to obtain a formal gender dysphoria diagnosis before they could receive gender-affirming care. Now those same diagnoses, made under military rules, documented in military records, and authorized by military policy, are being used to end their careers.

That is not a policy change. That is a trap.

Capt. Kai Proce served 11 years in the Army, deployed to South Korea and the Middle East, and mentored 125 cadets at West Point. His final performance review called him one of the best officers his commander had seen in nearly 30 years. A separation board did not dispute any of it. It removed him because his medical record showed a gender dysphoria diagnosis and gender-affirming care, both authorized under Army policy, according to a New York Times investigation.

Maj. Kara Corcoran led an infantry platoon in combat in Afghanistan and was five days from completing 18 years of service, an important milestone for retirement and health care benefits, when a separation board voted to remove her. The Army acknowledged she was a good soldier. The diagnosis in her authorized medical record was enough.

Thousands of service members face the same outcome. Army Reserve lawyer Priya Rashid told the Times she had lost 27 of 28 cases representing these troops, and that some of her clients were barred from the hearings that determined their futures.

A review of 58 studies found no evidence that transgender military service harmed cohesion, deployability, or readiness. These troops have not failed any military standard. They are being removed for care their own institution authorized them to receive.
