Stop punishing parents and children for unavoidable absences

Stop punishing parents and children for unavoidable absences
The Issue
As a mother of two children with asthma and weakened immune systems, I find myself in a frustrating battle against illnesses that keep my children home from school more often than we’d like. In the UK, the weather contributes to my sons' health issues, increasing their vulnerability to colds and other viruses. When they're ill, they must stay home from school to recover and to protect others. However, during these necessary absences, schools mark them down as truant or absent, leading to repercussions for both them and myself.
This situation is all too common for many parents and guardians who are nurturing children with underlying health issues. Our children should not be further penalized for conditions beyond their control. In many cases, obtaining a doctor's note is an insurmountable task when the child is too unwell to be transported. This often leaves us in a difficult situation where we are faced with penalties for school absences that are entirely valid and necessary.
Statistics show that children with chronic illnesses have more frequent absences, yet the system often treats these circumstances as truant behavior rather than recognizing the genuine health concerns at play. According to the NHS, conditions such as asthma and weakened immune systems affect a significant number of children in the UK, underlining the need for a more understanding approach by educational institutions.
I propose a revision of current policies surrounding school absences due to genuine health issues. Schools should accept parental confirmation of illness in cases where a doctor's note is unattainable. Additionally, schools should develop systems to support these students academically during their recovery period, and avoid unjust penalties for families already stressed by their children's health struggles.
By acknowledging and adapting to the needs of children with chronic health conditions, we can create a more empathetic and understanding educational system. By signing this petition, you are advocating for policy changes that would benefit children with health challenges and their families, promoting a fairer approach to school attendance. Please help us support children who are already facing challenges by signing this petition. Together, we can make a difference.
