Stop Public Drug Use and dirty syringe litter our community

Stop Public Drug Use and dirty syringe litter our community
The Issue
Our beloved city of Lewiston, ME is grappling with a crisis that affects us all. The visible increase in syringes scattered across our streets and the prevalence of illegal public drug use has tarnished our community's reputation. These activities not only create an unsafe environment but also deter potential customers from supporting our local businesses. Our citizens and businesses are feeling the impact as they consider relocating, seeking safer and cleaner places to call home or operate their enterprises.
The consequences of leaving this issue unaddressed are grave. Local businesses, which are the backbone of our community, are at risk of closure due to dwindling customer numbers, harming our local economy and job market. Families, who once took pride in our community, now live in fear of the dangers posed by discarded needles and public drug use. This is not the Lewiston we know and cherish.
We urge city officials and law enforcement agencies to take immediate and concrete action, by passing the SSP ordinance (Needle exchange) that was initiated by Councilor Soule in February of 2025 , to address this issue. Increasing patrols in affected areas, implementing stricter consequences for public drug use, and enhancing community awareness about the dangers of drug use and littering are vital steps towards a safer Lewiston. Additionally, we call for more investment in rehabilitation programs to provide those struggling with addiction the help they need.
Immediate action needs to be taken to restore the beauty and safety of Lewiston. Our community's future depends on decisive steps to eradicate these harmful activities from our streets. Let us come together to hold our city leaders accountable and demand action. Please join us in signing this petition to make Lewiston a safer, cleaner city for everyone.
