STOP Proposed protected bike lane and changes to street configuration to O’Connell Street

STOP Proposed protected bike lane and changes to street configuration to O’Connell Street
The issue
We are urging Adelaide City Council to ABANDON their proposal to change the configuration of O’Connell Street. What they are proposing is essentially what they have introduced on upper Frome Road in the city.
• Permanent protected bike lane
• No parking at all on O’Connell Street eastern and western side between peak periods losing up to 100 on road carparks per day
• Single lane traffic only during other times with parking between bike lane and single lane
• 30km/hr speed limit
ISSUES FOR BUSINESSES:
• Parking on O’Connell Street during peak periods is critical to trade and business deliveries
• One lane traffic will cause heavy traffic conditions which will deter customers
• Trying to Park on O’Connell Street will halt traffic, creating even more congestion
• Delivery trucks will open their doors onto the proposed bike lane
• Customers will need to manoeuvre around speeding bikes
• Our calculations predict a severe negative impact of not less than 30% of over 5 million transactions per year along the street resulting in many job losses and financial stress for all family-owned businesses.
ISSUES FOR RESIDENTS:
• All side streets will be congested by customers
• All side streets will be used for business deliveries by big trucks
• Trying to turn into or over O’Connell Street will be very difficult and lengthy
• Le Fevre Terrace and Jeffcott Street will become very congested
• Traffic entering O’Connell Street will need to enter into the bike lane to see if traffic is coming
ISSUES FOR COMMUTERS:
• No parking on O’Connell Street during peak periods
• Difficult to find parking on congested side streets lengthy distance to their destination
• Congested traffic back to Main North Road and Prospect Road
• More heavy congestion on Fitzroy Terrace

O’Connell Street – Streetscape Upgrade Petition
To the City of Adelaide Council,
The petitioners below urge the City of Adelaide Council to reassess the current O’Connell Street
Streetscape Upgrade.
The Council must thoroughly consider the concerns of traders, property owners, residents, and
commuters before moving forward with plans that could jeopardise North Adelaide’s economic and
social fabric.
We, the undersigned, hold the following concerns regarding the proposed redevelopment:
TRAFFIC CONGESTION & ROAD FUNCTIONALITY
• Reducing O’Connell Street to one traffic lane in each direction will cause severe congestion and diverting vehicles onto Le Fevre Terrace and War Memorial Drive, will negatively affect surrounding streets.
• O’Connell Street is a critical north-south thoroughfare, and restricting its traffic capacity will deter visitors and damage local businesses.
• The plan prioritises underutilised cycling infrastructure over the needs of thousands of motorists and businesses.
LOSS OF PEAK HOUR PARKING & BUSINESS VIABILITY
• Removing morning peak hour parking on the eastern side of O’Connell Street will devastate early trade for essential businesses such as The Bakery on O’Connell, Tynte Flowers, National
Pharmacy and upcoming tenants at 88 O’Connell.
• Eliminating evening peak hour parking on the western side will cut off vital evening trade for North Adelaide Village.
• These changes will result in significant revenue losses and job redundancies across the precinct.
• Not less than 30% of over 5 million transactions will be impacted negatively, on all family businesses.
ECONOMIC IMPACT ON THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
• Reduced accessibility will drive customers away from North Adelaide, weakening the precinct’s economic health.
• The proposed changes threaten the long-term survival of family-run businesses and impact employees.
• The Council risks driving businesses out of the city and worsening Adelaide’s post-COVID economic recovery.
INADEQUATE PUBLIC CONSULTATION & PROCESS
• Local traders and property owners were not adequately engaged in the consultation process.
• No transparent economic or traffic impact studies have been released demonstrating the viability or benefits of the proposed changes.
• Alternative solutions, such as modest streetscape improvements without sacrificing lanes and parking, have not been adequately explored.
REDUNDANT CYCLING INFRASTRUCTURE
• Sufficient cycling routes already exist on Jeffcott Street and Le Fevre Terrace to Frome Road, rendering additional O’Connell Street lanes unnecessary.
• The current proposal will divert funds from genuine improvements to pedestrian safety and business accessibility.
O’Connell Street – Streetscape Upgrade Petition
We, the undersigned, demand that the City of Adelaide Council immediately halt the implementation of the current O’Connell Street Streetscape Upgrade plan.
We call on the Council to commit to a redevelopment approach that preserves O’Connell Street’s key
role as a north-south traffic route, protects local business viability, and incorporates meaningful
consultation, transparent economic analysis, and sensible traffic planning.
