The Issue

Living on the Merrimack River in West Newbury, MA, I have witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of pollution on both our natural environment and our community. Unchecked pollutants threaten the aquatic ecosystems and the wildlife that calls this river home, including fish, birds, and plants. The river, once a vibrant lifeline to the communities it meanders through, is now in distress.

Pollution in the Merrimack arises from a variety of sources, including industrial waste, agricultural runoff, and inadequate wastewater treatment facilities. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the Merrimack River is ranked among the top ten most polluted rivers in the United States. Yearly, millions of gallons of untreated sewage overflow from outdated combined sewer systems, contaminating the water and making it unsafe for recreational use.

The impact on us as residents is profound. Our access to clean water and safe recreational areas is compromised. Fishing, swimming, kayaking, and other activities we once enjoyed are becoming risky. Our property values are at risk, and our health is increasingly threatened by exposure to pollutants.

This urgent matter demands an actionable response. We call upon the local government in West Newbury and surrounding areas to prioritize funding for the modernization of wastewater treatment facilities and to implement stricter regulations on industrial emissions and agricultural run-off. Additionally, transparency and regular monitoring of the river's water quality should be mandated, with frequent public reporting to ensure accountability.

By coming together as a community, we can advocate for the changes necessary to restore the Merrimack River to its former glory. Protecting the river is not just about maintaining the natural beauty of our environment—it’s about safeguarding our home, our health, and our future.

Please join me in signing this petition to urge the necessary actions and protect Merrimack River for ourselves and generations to come.
