Stop Polluting water in the name of Religion and culture.
The Issue
NO DONATION PLEASE
We, the undersigned, recognize that water is sacred and central to life, culture, and spirituality. For generations, diverse communities across Canada—including Indigenous Peoples and immigrant faith traditions—have held water at the heart of ceremonies, rituals, and daily practices.
However, we also acknowledge that some traditional and religious practices, when carried out in modern contexts, can unintentionally cause water pollution:
Ceremonial offerings such as flowers, cloth, ashes, or other items are sometimes placed in rivers and lakes.
Ritual immersions and large gatherings near water bodies can increase waste, plastics, and chemical residues.
Practices rooted in older times, when natural materials easily decomposed, now often involve modern items that harm ecosystems.
Our Belief:-
We believe that honouring tradition must go hand in hand with protecting the environment. The sacredness of water in all faiths and cultures calls us not only to use it in rituals but also to safeguard its purity for generations to come.
Our Petition:-
We call upon governments, faith leaders, and community organizations to:
Provide eco-friendly alternatives for ritual and traditional offerings (e.g., biodegradable items instead of plastics, cloth, or toxic materials).
Create designated safe zones for ceremonial water use that include proper waste management.
Educate communities about how modern materials pollute waterways and how small changes in practice can preserve both tradition and the environment.
Support interfaith and Indigenous initiatives that combine spiritual respect for water with environmental stewardship.
Fund research and awareness campaigns to adapt religious/traditional practices in eco-sustainable ways.
Why This Matters:
To pollute water in the name of tradition contradicts the very spirit of our faiths and cultures, which teach respect, purity, and care for creation. By updating practices thoughtfully, we ensure that rituals remain meaningful without harming the water we all depend on.
We, the undersigned, call for a united effort to protect Canada’s waters while honouring and preserving our diverse religious and cultural traditions.
