Stop Police Harassment of Upper West Side Book Vendors

The Issue

My name is Nelson and I've been selling books on the Upper West Side of Manhattan for over a decade. This spot in this lively neighborhood isn't just my workplace; it's my refuge and passion. As a street book vendor, I cherish every conversation I have with passersby, the knowledge exchanged, and the sense of community it fosters. But recently, this integral part of my life has come under threat. It is not just about the money, if I am selling a book for $4 and a buyer only has $3 dollars. I am the type of guy that will say take the book and bring me the remaining dollar when you can.

Twice now, the police have disrupted my work, causing unnecessary stress and anxiety. These encounters aren't just inconvenient—they're distressing. For someone like me who is overweight and with health issues, added stress isn't just an inconvenience; it can be a health risk! And it has been so stressful and depressing that I had to even ask my friend and neighbor to help me create this petition!

Despite these challenges, I'm committed to giving back to my community. Just recently, I organized a back-to-school backpack giveaway, sharing what little I have to support kids in my neighborhood!

Street vendors like me are crucial to New York's vibrant culture. We bring accessibility to literature and encourage community spirit. Yet we face undue harassment, which detracts from our ability to earn a living. New York City's Law Department and Police must recognize and respect our rights.

In New York City, the First Amendment protects your right to sell books without a general vendor license, as written materials like books are considered expressive content protected by free speech. I urge local lawmakers and the NYPD to provide clear guidelines and training to officers regarding the rights of street vendors. With your support, we can push for fair treatment and protection for vendors in the Upper West Side. Last but not least, I also want to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout this endeavor!

Sign this petition to help bring an end to the unnecessary harassment of street book vendors. Stand with us in the fight for our right to earn a living and contribute positively to this incredible community.
