Stop Poisonous Carbaryl Spraying in Del Dios

Stop Poisonous Carbaryl Spraying in Del Dios
The Issue
The Del Dios Habitat Protection League, working with Green Forest Tree Service, has been spraying carbaryl throughout our residential neighborhoods to treat oak trees for goldspotted oak borer. While we support protecting our oak trees, their methods put our families at serious risk.
What is carbaryl?
- Classified by the EPA as "likely to be carcinogenic in humans"
- A restricted material in California requiring special licensing
- Banned in the European Union since 2007
- Can cause neurological effects including headaches, memory loss, and muscle weakness
- Listed under California's Proposition 65 as a chemical that can pass from mother to baby during pregnancy
- Linked in peer-reviewed studies to an elevated risk of stillbirth and miscarriage when pregnant women are exposed
- Shown in animal studies to cause birth defects, reduced fetal brain development, and other developmental harm at exposure levels relevant to real-world spraying
What they're doing wrong:
- Spraying on private property without permission
- No warning signs posted before, during, or after application
- Spraying while children are present and playing nearby
- Using high-pressure equipment on windy days, causing chemical drift
- Applying pesticides on city-owned lots without authorization
- Vehicle not properly marked for identification
We demand:
- Immediate suspension of all carbaryl applications in residential areas
- Mandatory notification of all residents 48 hours before any future pesticide applications
- Posted warning signs in all treated areas
- Alternative treatment methods that don't pose health risks to children
- Full investigation by San Diego County Agricultural Commissioner
- Our families deserve to know when dangerous chemicals are being sprayed near our homes. Our children deserve to play safely in their own neighborhoods.
The Del Dios Habitat Protection League and Green Forest Tree Service must be held accountable for putting community health at risk. We support protecting our oak trees, but not at the expense of our children's safety.
Sign this petition to demand safer pest control practices that protect both our trees AND our families.
